Echeveria 'Black Knight' is a striking succulent renowned for its dark, almost black foliage and sculptural form. Unlike many other Echeveria cultivars, it is not a hybrid but a naturally occurring sport of Echeveria affinis, originally discovered in Mexico. It was first collected by R.J. Taylor along the scenic road from Mazatlán to Durango, where it grew in partial shade beneath native vegetation. This hardy origin contributes to its adaptability and appeal among collectors and gardeners alike.

This variety forms compact rosettes with pointed, lance-shaped leaves that range from deep burgundy to near black. A delicate coating of farina gives the surface a subtle, silvery sheen, adding a soft contrast to the dark tones. Mature rosettes can reach up to 12–15 cm in diameter, making it an excellent feature plant in pots, rockeries, and succulent displays. The rich pigmentation intensifies in full sun, especially during cooler months, adding depth and drama to any arrangement.

In late spring to summer, Echeveria 'Black Knight' sends up flower stalks to around 15 cm tall, bearing clusters of small, bell-shaped blooms. The flowers feature scarlet red corollas paired with olive-green sepals, creating a bold contrast against the moody rosettes.

Care for this succulent is simple and familiar to those accustomed to Echeveria species. It prefers full sun to part shade, thriving in well-drained soil with infrequent watering. Allow the soil to dry completely between watering, and avoid wetting the rosette to prevent rot. Repotting is best done in spring or early summer, using a free-draining cactus or succulent mix.

Echeveria 'Black Knight' is an excellent choice for Australian gardens with mild climates, where it can grow outdoors year-round. In cooler regions, it also performs well indoors in a bright, well-ventilated space. Its bold, sculptural form pairs beautifully with softer-toned succulents, and it’s especially popular in minimalist or monochromatic arrangements.

Whether grown in a small pot or featured in a mixed planting, Echeveria 'Black Knight' adds a unique, moody elegance to any collection. With its low-maintenance needs and unforgettable colour, it’s a favourite among succulent enthusiasts and designers looking for contrast and texture.
