Echeveria 'Blue Bird' is a striking succulent plant that forms rosettes of thick, silvery-blue leaves with a powdery coating. This hybrid is believed to be a cross between Echeveria colorata and Echeveria desmetiana, and it was created by Frank Reinelt. The rosettes can grow up to 10 cm in diameter, but they will stay smaller if the offsets are left to cluster. In autumn and winter, the leaves develop bright pink margins that add a pop of color to this already stunning plant.

To ensure proper growth, Echeveria 'Blue Bird' requires a potting soil mix that drains quickly and moderate amounts of water from spring to fall. The plant prefers full sun to partial shade, but it should be protected from the intense afternoon sun to avoid sunburn. This plant responds well to cold stress and can withstand low temperatures without any harm, as we grow it in the garden here in Victoria where it does very well.

Echeveria 'Blue Bird' can be propagated from leaves, offsets, stem cuttings, or seeds. The best time to propagate this succulent is in the spring by taking cuttings or separating offsets. When grown in a pot, this plant should be repotted only when necessary, and it is essential to ensure the soil is dry before repotting.

With its unique beauty, low maintenance requirements, and hardiness in Australian gardens, Echeveria 'Blue Bird' is an excellent choice for adding color and texture to your garden or succulent collection. Its compact rosettes, silvery-blue leaves, and pinkish-orange flowers that appear on slender stalks during summer make it an eye-catching plant that is sure to impress.
