Echeveria Cubic Frost - Single
Echeveria 'Cubic Frost' is a distinctive hybrid with thick, uplifted leaves arranged into an unusually geometric rosette. Its foliage ranges from frosty blue-grey and lilac to lilac-pink, with the leaves developing a pronounced upward curve and angular form that gives the cultivar its characteristic sculptural appearance.
Geometric lilac rosettes
The fleshy leaves are broad towards the base and become more pointed towards the tips, curving upwards to create a compact, almost three-dimensional rosette. A natural coating of powdery farina gives the foliage its soft frosted appearance and should be handled as little as possible to avoid marking the leaves.
Colour changes naturally according to season and growing conditions. Good light and cooler conditions can encourage stronger lilac, pink and purple tones, while actively growing plants may display softer blue-grey and greenish shades.
Flowers and offsetting growth
'Cubic Frost' produces offsets readily as it matures and can eventually develop into attractive clusters of rosettes. This listing is specifically for the single-head form, while established plants may begin producing offsets as they continue to grow.
Flower stems can rise above the foliage from late spring into summer, carrying bright orange to orange-red bell-shaped flowers that contrast strongly with the cooler colouring of the rosettes.
The origins of Echeveria 'Cubic Frost'
'Cubic Frost' is a documented hybrid bred by Renee O'Connell in California from Echeveria 'Doppler' and a proprietary Echeveria identified as 'R-21'. The cross was made in 2011, with 'Cubic Frost' selected for its unusual uplifted foliage, geometric rosette, attractive lilac colouring and freely offsetting growth.
Growing Echeveria 'Cubic Frost'
Grow in a free-draining succulent mix with plenty of bright light and good airflow. Morning sun with some protection from intense afternoon sun during very hot Australian summer conditions can help maintain attractive compact growth while reducing the risk of scorching.
Water thoroughly when required, allowing the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Plants established outdoors in suitable free-draining conditions can tolerate extended dry periods, while container-grown plants will generally require more regular watering during active growth. Avoid keeping the roots continuously wet, particularly during cooler periods.
