Echeveria 'Dark Ice' is a compact, rosette-forming succulent admired for its dramatic foliage and rich colour transitions. Believed to be a hybrid within the Crassulaceae family, its precise parentage remains undocumented, yet its distinctive traits suggest it may descend from species like Echeveria agavoides or Echeveria lilacina, both known for their bold colouring and tidy structure.

In its typical state, the fleshy, spoon-shaped leaves of Echeveria 'Dark Ice' appear a soft, dusty blue-grey with subtle pink edging. Under stress—from cold temperatures or strong sunlight—the foliage deepens to an intense burgundy-red, creating a striking contrast that lives up to its evocative name. The rosettes are tight and symmetrical, usually growing no taller or wider than 10 cm, making this cultivar ideal for small pots, succulent bowls, or detail work in rockeries.

Come summer, mature plants may send up arching flower stalks bearing clusters of bell-shaped, red-orange blooms that attract pollinators and add seasonal interest. The plant thrives in full sun to light shade and needs well-drained soil to prevent rot. Like many succulents, it prefers a “soak and dry” watering method and should be protected from frost, making it best suited to Australian regions with mild winters or container growing in cooler zones.

With its sculptural form and ever-changing hues, Echeveria 'Dark Ice' offers year-round appeal in both indoor collections and outdoor succulent landscapes.
