Echeveria Derenbergii
Echeveria derenbergii, popularly known as the Painted Lady or Baby Echeveria, is a perennial succulent that captivates with its unique and vibrant attributes. Endemic to the Sierra Mixteca in eastern Oaxaca, Mexico, this charming plant is distinguished by its dense rosettes, which evoke the design of a traditional pagoda. Each rosette typically measures around 8 cm in diameter and is adorned with frosted, fleshy leaves that often boast hints of a reddish hue on their margins and tips.
Of particular note are the bristle-tipped leaves of Echeveria derenbergii, which are shaped like an obovate-cuneate and come to an abrupt sharp point. These robust leaves are typically about 4 cm long, 2.5 cm wide and 0.5 cm thick, adding an appealingly chunky aesthetic to the plant's overall appearance.
The Painted Lady further delights with its bell-shaped flowers. These blooms are predominantly yellow, with the added flair of red-tipped 'keels', offering a unique visual contrast. The flowers appear on pinkish-red stems, blooming from late winter through to summer.
Echeveria derenbergii is a dynamic plant, rapidly producing offsets even at a young age. This quality enables it to form expansive colonies of rosettes when given ample space to grow. It’s an ideal choice for rock gardens and pot arrangements, where its resilient nature and intriguing aesthetic can be showcased.
However, the Painted Lady does require some attention to its needs. While it is a hardy plant, it cannot withstand temperatures below -7°C, meaning it will need winter protection in cooler climates. Yet in the warmer months, it can happily bask in an outdoor setting, provided it is sheltered from harsh elements.
In recognition of its aesthetic appeal and hardy nature, the Royal Horticultural Society has conferred upon Echeveria derenbergii the coveted Award of Garden Merit. This accolade serves as a testament to its unique allure, making it a fascinating addition to any succulent collection. Notably, it is named in honour of Dr. Julius Derenberg of Hamburg, a renowned German physician and plant collector who had a particular interest in Mesembs.

Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
