Echeveria 'Estrella' is a fascinating succulent species that beautifully melds aesthetics with resilience. Despite its uncertain origins, it boasts a distinct visual appeal that sets it apart from other members of the Echeveria genus.
This cultivar captures your attention with its singular rosette, composed of oval, elongated leaves, assembled in a star-shaped pattern - a feature that lends the plant its name, 'Estrella', Spanish for 'star'. The leaves are coloured a subtle glaucous grey with a subtle reddish hint at their tips, and they're packed so tightly that the underlying stem remains hidden from view.
In spring and summer, the Echeveria 'Estrella' puts on a show with a raceme-arranged inflorescence of yellow, bell-shaped flowers sprouting from the rosette's centre, adding an extra dash of charm to its appeal.
The cultivation of Echeveria 'Estrella' is a rewarding endeavour. This hardy plant, akin to its relatives from the Mexican highlands and parts of South America, thrives in challenging environments. A sunny spot will ensure the full exposure it needs to accentuate the reddish tinge on its leaves and vibrant green colour overall. It's winter-hardy down to 4ºC, so an easy-to-move pot is recommended for bringing indoors during the cooler months in Australia.
Watering Echeveria 'Estrella' requires a careful hand, especially during winter. Soil selection is straightforward, with any well-draining mix doing the job. A bit of perlite or pumice can enhance drainage, and a light fertilization during the growing season will keep it happy and healthy.
With propagation via leaf cuttings or offsets, the Echeveria 'Estrella' is not just a stunning plant, but also a gift that keeps on giving. Its blue-toned leaves grow denser and more compact with ample sunlight, making this succulent a delightful addition to any plant collection.
