Echeveria lilacina, also known as Ghost Echeveria, is an alluring succulent native to Nuevo Leon, Mexico, where it grows on rocky outcroppings at higher altitudes. Known for its slow growth and striking appearance, it has become a popular choice among plant enthusiasts.
This succulent features dense, short-stemmed rosettes that can grow up to 20 cm in diameter. The sculpted, up-curved leaves are spoon-shaped, silvery-grey, and often suffused with a gentle blush of lilac or purple when exposed to full sun. This unique colouration is due to a powdery waxy coating, giving the plant an almost alabaster appearance.
Flowering in late winter to early spring, Echeveria lilacina produces pale pink to coral-red blooms on reddish, arching stems. The flowers add an elegant touch, enhancing its visual appeal.
Cultivation of Echeveria lilacina requires careful attention to sunlight and watering. Though drought-tolerant, it thrives with adequate moisture during the growing season without becoming waterlogged. A very porous soil ensures quick drainage, while good air movement minimizes the risk of pests and diseases. It's a plant that can tolerate light frosts, but fares best with temperatures between 5-10 °C in winter.
In landscaping, Echeveria lilacina can be an eye-catching feature, almost appearing white. It's an excellent addition to succulent gardens, rock gardens, and container plantings. The subtle and elegant colour palette combined with its sculpted form makes it a captivating presence in any setting, without being too overpowering. Its grace, slow growth, and ease of care make it a beloved selection for both beginners and experienced gardeners alike.
