Echeveria 'Lulu' is a beautifully distinctive succulent hybrid forming compact rosettes of thick, sculptural leaves in soft blue-grey, lavender, lilac and muted pink tones. A particularly heavy coating of powdery farina gives the foliage its pale, almost porcelain-like appearance, with the underlying lavender shades becoming especially noticeable on mature and well-coloured plants.
'Lulu' is widely reported to be a cross between Echeveria laui and Graptopetalum rusbyi, combining the exceptionally powdery, rounded foliage associated with E. laui with the clustering tendency and subtle purple coloration of its Graptopetalum parent. This parentage technically places the hybrid within ×Graptoveria, although it is commonly grown and sold as Echeveria 'Lulu'. The cultivar is associated with Korean hybridisers Chang-jo and Air Magic.
Its fleshy leaves are broadly spoon-shaped, tapering into small pointed tips and curving gently upwards around the centre of the rosette. Depending on season and growing conditions, colour can range from chalky blue-green through lavender-grey to dusty mauve and pink, with rosy-purple flushing developing around the outer leaves and tips. Individual rosettes generally remain around 5–10 cm across, while prolific offsets can gradually produce impressive multi-headed clusters.
Bright light or gentle direct sun encourages compact growth, strong lavender colouring and well-defined rosettes. In Australian conditions, protection from harsh afternoon sun during extreme summer heat helps prevent scorching, particularly where the powdery farina is disturbed. Grow in a porous, rapidly draining succulent mix and water thoroughly only after the growing medium has dried.
The powdery farina should be left untouched wherever possible, as handling permanently marks the coating. With its chunky leaves, unusual lavender colouring and naturally clustering form, 'Lulu' develops considerably more character as it matures.
