Echeveria macdougallii is a striking and unique succulent that hails from the dry, semi-desert regions of southern Mexico, specifically Oaxaca. Named in honour of Thomas Baillie MacDougall, a renowned Scottish horticulturist and botanist, this charming plant adds both beauty and character to any collection. It’s particularly admired for its delicate rosettes and vibrant leaf colouring.
This upright succulent forms compact rosettes that can reach up to 30 cm in height, with individual leaves measuring up to 1.5 cm long and 0.4 cm wide. The leaves are thick, fleshy, and elliptic-oblanceolate in shape, exhibiting a soft pastel green colour. The true allure of Echeveria macdougallii lies in its striking pink to red edges, which intensify as the weather cools, making it a stand-out feature in any garden or container.
The plant’s bell-shaped flowers are another highlight, blooming in summer with a beautiful red hue and yellow-tipped petals. These flowers typically appear in clusters of three on short stalks reaching up to 9 cm in height, bringing a burst of colour during the warmer months. The blooms add to the plant’s appeal, complementing its vivid foliage.
Echeveria macdougallii is not a difficult plant to care for, as long as basic care principles are followed. It thrives in well-drained soil and should not have water allowed to sit in the rosette to prevent rot. Regular watering during dry spells is essential, although it is drought-tolerant once established. The plant benefits from full sun but can also tolerate partial shade, making it adaptable for different garden situations. As with most Echeveria species, it is susceptible to pests like mealy bugs, so keep an eye on the plant and remove any dead leaves to reduce the risk of infestations.
This beautiful succulent is perfect for gardeners looking for a hardy yet eye-catching plant that brings colour and interest to both indoor and outdoor spaces. It’s particularly well-suited for container gardening, where its vibrant edges can truly shine.
