Echeveria 'Panda Face', also known as Echeveria 'Emerald Tips', is a charming miniature hybrid derived from Echeveria derenbergii, valued for its exceptionally compact rosettes and distinctive coloured leaf tips. Each individual rosette typically reaches only around 4–5 cm across, making this a naturally small-growing Echeveria with plenty of character despite its diminutive size.
The tightly arranged, fleshy leaves form neat, symmetrical rosettes in fresh green to blue-green tones. Their most distinctive feature is the contrasting colour concentrated at the leaf tips. With good light, particularly during cooler periods and under brighter growing conditions, these tips can develop increasingly vivid pinkish-red to rich red colouring. Like many Echeveria, colour intensity varies naturally with season, temperature and light levels.
One of the appealing characteristics of Echeveria 'Panda Face' is its willingness to produce offsets around the base. Over time, these small daughter rosettes develop into an attractive multi-headed cluster, creating a dense mound of miniature rosettes. Its compact growth habit makes it particularly well suited to small pots, succulent bowls, mixed arrangements and collections where finer-growing varieties can be appreciated up close.
Grow Echeveria 'Panda Face' in bright light to maintain its tight form and encourage stronger tip colour. In Australian conditions, morning sun or bright filtered light with some protection from intense summer afternoon sun is a sensible choice, particularly in hotter regions. Plant in a porous, free-draining succulent mix and water thoroughly before allowing the growing medium to dry between waterings. Avoid prolonged wet soil, especially during cool weather, and provide protection from heavy frost.
Compact, colourful and naturally clustering, Echeveria 'Panda Face' is an appealing choice for anyone who enjoys miniature Echeverias and beautifully detailed rosette forms.
