Echeveria purpusorum is a delightful succulent that will add a touch of unique elegance to any plant collection. This small and slow-growing plant features oval-shaped, thick leaves that come in deep olive-green, grey-green, or white-green hues, with striking reddish-brown markings that add to its appeal. As it matures, the colors deepen to shades of red, creating a stunning contrast with earthy tones.
This plant produces a tight, usually solitary rosette that slowly grows up to 8cm in diameter and height. Occasionally, it will produce a few offsets, but it is primarily a solitary grower. The leaves are ovate or triangular-ovate, sharp-edged, up to 4cm long and 2.5cm wide, with a pointy apex that gives them an interesting shape.
In late spring, Echeveria purpusorum produces scarlet-red flowers with yellow tips on a stem up to 30cm long, adding a burst of color to its already beautiful appearance. This plant is a rare species, and most of the plants labeled as E. purpusorum are usually hybrids. One of the hybrids is Echeveria 'Dionysos', which has plumper leaves than the slender leaves of E. purpusorum.
Growing and caring for Echeveria purpusorum is not complicated, as it is a hardy succulent that thrives in plenty of light and careful watering habits. Ensure that water does not sit in the rosette to avoid rot or fungal diseases that can harm the plant. Remove dead leaves from the bottom of the plant as it grows to avoid providing a haven for pests, as Echeverias are susceptible to mealy bugs.
Echeveria purpusorum is native to Mexico, specifically Puebla and Oaxaca, and thrives in warm, arid conditions. If you're looking for a low-maintenance yet striking plant to add to your collection, Echeveria purpusorum is an excellent choice. Its slow growth and small size make it perfect for smaller spaces, and it adds a touch of elegance to any room it's placed in.
