Euphorbia wakefieldii is a compact, sculptural succulent shrublet known for its angular, spiny stems and vivid flowers. Native to Kenya and potentially extending into Tanzania, this naturally occurring species from the Euphorbiaceae family thrives in arid conditions and brings a bold architectural element to both outdoor rockeries and indoor succulent collections.

This dwarf Euphorbia typically grows to around 15 cm tall, forming a small but eye-catching clump of stout, five-angled branches that are densely lined with spines. The stems are tufted and often bear small, stubby leaves that appear intermittently during active growth periods. In contrast to its tough appearance, Euphorbia wakefieldii produces delicate, cup-shaped flowers—known as cyathia—in bright yellow or red hues. While these blooms are small, they add a cheerful touch against the plant's rugged silhouette.

Like many members of its genus, it exudes a milky latex sap when damaged, which is toxic and can irritate the skin or eyes—so gloves are recommended when handling. Despite its formidable defences, this species is easy to care for, preferring well-drained soil, infrequent watering, and protection from harsh afternoon sun. It performs well in pots, xeriscapes, and drought-tolerant garden beds, particularly in frost-free climates similar to those found across much of Australia’s northern and inland regions.

A slow-growing, low-maintenance plant, Euphorbia wakefieldii offers an intriguing mix of form, function, and colour for collectors and enthusiasts seeking something just a little different.
