Graptopetalum paraguayense ssp. bernalense is an elegant and captivating succulent that showcases the best of its parent species, Graptopetalum paraguayense, combined with a unique character shaped by its native habitat in the Tamaulipas region of Mexico. This subspecies, often called the Ghost Plant or Mother of Pearl Plant, forms compact, symmetrical rosettes of thick, fleshy leaves that create a serene and ethereal presence. Its silvery-grey leaves can shift to pale green or lavender-pink when exposed to bright light, making it a rewarding plant for those who enjoy subtle colour changes throughout the year.

Reaching approximately 20 cm in height, this low-growing succulent spreads gracefully, rooting where its stems touch the ground, making it ideal for rock gardens, containers or as a groundcover in xeriscaping. The smooth, waxy leaves form rosettes with a soft, ghostly glow, complemented in summer by delicate star-shaped flowers in shades of cream, pale pink, or soft yellow. Its flowers rise elegantly on arching stalks, adding a whimsical, airy quality to the plant.

Graptopetalum paraguayense ssp. bernalense is remarkably resilient and easy to care for, making it well suited to Australian climates. It thrives in well-draining soil and appreciates a position with bright light, though partial shade can intensify its distinctive colouration. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, especially during cooler months when its growth slows. Its ability to tolerate dry conditions, combined with its unique beauty and graceful form, makes it an intriguing addition for collectors and gardeners alike. The ease with which it can be propagated from leaves or cuttings further adds to its appeal for both novice and experienced succulent enthusiasts.
