Graptoveria ‘Fred Ives’ Variegata Crested is an exceptional and highly collectable form of the well-known hybrid ‘Fred Ives’, prized for its dramatic crested growth and complex, ever-changing colouring. Instead of forming traditional rosettes, this cristate mutation produces a flattened, fan-like crest with undulating folds, giving the plant a sculptural, almost organic appearance.
This cultivar originates from the famous hybrid created by Albert Baynes, combining the resilience of Graptopetalum paraguayense with the bold form of Echeveria gibbiflora. In this crested variegated form, chlorophyll distribution is uneven, resulting in variegation expressed as warm yellow to golden tones rather than white. New growth emerges soft green before rapidly transitioning through bronze, copper and burnished gold shades, often displaying multiple colours on a single leaf. No two crests are ever identical.
The thick, waxy leaves are tightly packed along the crest, creating dense, wavy ridges that deepen in colour with sun exposure and seasonal temperature changes. Growth is slower than the regular form, but over time it can form substantial, impressive clumps if left undisturbed. During the warmer months, mature plants may produce slender flower stems bearing pale yellow blooms with subtle reddish centres.
Graptoveria ‘Fred Ives’ Variegata Crested thrives in bright light to full sun, where its warm metallic tones develop best. Plant in a very free-draining succulent mix and water only when the soil has fully dried. It is drought tolerant and well suited to pots, raised planters, and protected garden positions across most temperate Australian climates, with protection from heavy frost advised.
This striking crested succulent is ideal for collectors seeking form, colour variation, and natural artistry in a single, low-maintenance plant.
