Graptoveria Marpin (Rose Queen)

Graptoveria 'Marpin' (Rose Queen) is a beautifully coloured, freely branching succulent that develops substantial rosettes of thick, fleshy leaves in changing shades of blue-green, mauve, rose and purple. Often associated with the name Rose Queen in cultivation, Marpin is particularly striking as it matures, developing larger individual rosettes and branching stems that can eventually form an impressive multi-headed specimen.

Large rosettes and branching growth

Marpin produces fleshy, somewhat pointed leaves arranged into well-defined rosettes. Young growth is often predominantly green to blue-green, but established plants can develop increasingly rich pink, mauve and purple tones as the foliage matures and growing conditions change.

Plants branch readily with age, gradually developing multiple rosettes on increasingly substantial stems. Unlike our Rose Queen – Small Form, which remains very compact and produces large numbers of relatively small heads, Marpin develops considerably larger individual rosettes and a more open, substantial branching structure as it matures.

Rich and changing colour

One of Marpin's most attractive characteristics is its changing colour throughout the year. The substantial rosettes can range from soft blue-green and grey-green through dusty rose, pink and mauve to considerably deeper purple tones. Pink to rose-coloured margins are particularly noticeable on many plants, often providing a beautiful contrast against the cooler green centre of the rosette.

In our nursery we find that mature plants can develop particularly strong colour, with the deeper pigmentation often becoming more pronounced during periods of bright light and cooler conditions. Plant age, nutrition, moisture and the intensity of light can all contribute to differences in appearance, so individual plants may look quite different at various times of the year.

This natural variation is an important part of Marpin's character. Rather than remaining one fixed shade, an established plant can move through a surprisingly broad palette as new foliage develops and older leaves mature.

Flowers

Established plants may produce long, arching flower stems carrying attractive pink to coral-toned flowers with contrasting yellow centres. The flowering stems rise well above the foliage, while the branching rosettes continue to provide the plant's principal ornamental feature throughout the year.

Origins and parentage

Graptoveria 'Marpin' is widely associated with the name Rose Queen in horticultural cultivation. Its parentage has been reported as involving Graptopetalum paraguayense and Echeveria, with some horticultural references identifying Echeveria pulidonis as the Echeveria parent. However, reliable original breeding records are difficult to locate, so we regard the precise parentage as reported rather than conclusively documented.

Marpin and our Rose Queen – Small Form

We also grow a distinctly smaller plant that we originally obtained under the Rose Queen name. Although the two share many similarities in foliage, colour and general appearance, we have found their mature growth habits remain noticeably different in our nursery.

Marpin develops substantially larger individual rosettes that remain clearly defined even as the plant branches and forms a multi-headed cluster. Our Rose Queen – Small Form retains much smaller heads and offsets extremely freely, eventually producing exceptionally dense mounds containing numerous compact rosettes. Their colouring can also differ, although both are remarkably variable according to season and growing conditions. We therefore maintain the two separately rather than treating them as identical plants.

Growing Graptoveria 'Marpin'

Grow Marpin in a free-draining succulent mix with plenty of bright light to maintain strong, compact growth and encourage its characteristic colouring. Plants should be gradually acclimatised before exposure to intense Australian summer sun, particularly when moving from protected conditions, as strong afternoon heat can damage foliage that has not been accustomed to it.

Water thoroughly when required and allow the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Established plants are reasonably tolerant of dry periods, although prolonged dryness is not necessary simply to produce good colour. Seasonal conditions, plant maturity, nutrition and light all contribute to the changing appearance of the foliage.
