Gymnocalycium baldianum, also known as the spider-cactus or dwarf chin cactus, is a stunning cactus species native to the Catamarca Province of Argentina. This globose cactus is beloved by collectors for its ability to flower profusely from a young age, often blooming when only 2.5 cm wide. It typically reaches a diameter of 8 cm and stands 4 to 10 cm tall, with a dark grey-green to blue-green hue that can even appear brown in some conditions.
This resilient species thrives at elevations between 500 and 2,000 metres, growing in well-drained soil under full sun or bright indirect light. In summer, it produces vibrant flowers in shades of deep red, pink, or orange, measuring up to 6 cm across. These funnel-shaped blooms open wide in sunlight, creating a vivid display that contrasts beautifully with the cactus's pale grey spines.
Gymnocalycium baldianum is low-maintenance, making it an ideal choice for beginners. During the summer months, it prefers regular watering with time to dry out between sessions, while it should be kept dry in winter. It can tolerate cool temperatures, down to -10°C, as long as it's protected from frost.
This cactus has been recognised with the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, a testament to its striking beauty and ease of care. Ideal for indoor pots or outdoor rock gardens, Gymnocalycium baldianum is sure to captivate any cacti enthusiast.
