Haworthia cymbiformis 'Variegata', commonly known as the Cathedral Window Haworthia, is an endearing variegated succulent recognised for its intriguing blend of light-green and white striped foliage. Selected from the Haworthia cymbiformis species for its distinct pattern, this succulent adds a unique touch to any plant collection.
This plant forms stemless rosettes of thick, boat-shaped leaves, each leaf's irregular stripes as unique as a fingerprint. The rosettes can grow up to 8 cm tall and reach a diameter of 10 cm, with the plant's overall height reaching up to 15 cm, including its slender inflorescences. These towers of green bear tubular flowers that boast a delicate white to pale pink hue, highlighted with brownish-green veins, and make their appearance from mid-spring to early summer.
The Cathedral Window Haworthia thrives best in partial shade, making it an ideal indoor plant. It's perfectly at home in a well-lit area, away from the harsh afternoon sun, or tucked away in a shaded corner of your garden. Although it can tolerate a bit of shade, a fairly bright indirect light position brings out the best in its colouration.
The plant's care is straightforward, making it an excellent choice for those new to the succulent world or seasoned gardeners. It prefers a well-drained potting mix to prevent its roots from remaining wet for extended periods. Overwatering, particularly during the winter months, can lead to 'wet feet', a condition this plant doesn't recover from well.
Haworthia cymbiformis 'Variegata' doesn't require much in the way of fertilisation. A light feed during the active growing season with a diluted fertiliser should suffice. It's a slow grower, content in the same pot for years. However, it does appreciate being repotted into fresh soil every two to three years.
Propagating this plant is a cinch. It commonly produces offsets which can be easily separated once they've developed their own roots. The plant's offsets can be completely green, totally white, or variegated just like the parent, making propagation an exciting venture.
In summary, the Haworthia cymbiformis 'Variegata' is an appealing succulent with its non-uniform rosettes and variegated leaves. It's a versatile plant suitable for both indoor and outdoor spaces, providing a blend of easy care and visual interest.
