Haworthia Heidelbergensis is a small, stemless succulent plant with a rosette shape that can reach up to 8cm in diameter. It is a winter-growing species that is non-proliferous, meaning it does not produce offsets as easily as other Haworthia species and it is also a slow grower. This plant is native to a single location in the Heidelberg area, east of South Africa. It is deeply embedded in moss and lichen, indicating that it requires more shade than other Haworthia species, as well as a distinct summer resting period.
The leaves of Haworthia Heidelbergensis are many and erect to recurved, with small marginal and keel spines. They are usually dark green with reddish hues, and their end area is slightly translucent. The leaves are markedly acuminate, which means that they taper to a point, making them look sharp. This feature, combined with its unique coloration, makes Haworthia Heidelbergensis an attractive addition to any succulent collection.
This species has a simple inflorescence that produces 10-15 white flowers with brownish veins. Its flowers are small but beautiful and complement the plant's unique foliage well. Although Haworthia Heidelbergensis is known only from one locality, there are related populations at Matjestoon to the southwest and Bredasdorp, both of which have slightly different leaf shapes. Together, these three populations have no obvious affinities with any other species in the complex.
Haworthia Heidelbergensis is not continuously variable with any of its neighboring species, such as H. turgida, H. magnifica, H. floribunda, and H. retusa, all of which occur nearby. This plant offsets readily and can be relatively easy to grow if provided with a gritty, porous mix suitable for Haworthia. It prefers indirect, filtered light, making it an ideal indoor plant.
In conclusion, Haworthia Heidelbergensis is a unique and striking succulent species that is a fascinating plant to have for any collector. Its deeply embedded location, distinct summer resting period, and preference for shade make it a relatively easy plant to care for, and its attractive leaves and delicate flowers make it a beautiful addition to any collection.
