Haworthiopsis attenuata 'Wide Zebra'

Haworthiopsis attenuata 'Wide Zebra' is an attractive form of the familiar Zebra Haworthia, distinguished by its firm, tapering green leaves and strongly contrasting raised white tubercles. The prominent markings form irregular transverse bands across the foliage, creating the distinctive striped appearance for which these plants are particularly valued.

Strongly marked Zebra foliage

The pointed leaves form compact rosettes and are covered with numerous raised white tubercles, particularly on their outer surfaces. On this form the leaves have a relatively broad, substantial appearance, while the contrasting white markings create pronounced zebra-like bands against the dark green foliage.

Colour varies according to season and growing conditions. Plants generally remain green to deep green, while brighter light and drier conditions can encourage bronze, reddish or brownish tones.

Offsets and clustering growth

As plants mature, they produce offsets from around the base and gradually develop into attractive clusters of multiple rosettes. These offsets can be left attached to form an increasingly substantial specimen or separated once sufficiently developed for propagation.

Formerly known as Haworthia attenuata

Haworthiopsis attenuata was formerly classified as Haworthia attenuata and is still widely recognised and sold under the older name. It is native to South Africa's Eastern Cape and belongs to the firmer-leaved group of former Haworthias now placed in the genus Haworthiopsis.

'Wide Zebra' is a horticultural name used for this particularly broad-leaved, strongly marked form. As we do not have reliable provenance establishing it as a separate botanical variety, we prefer to describe it as a cultivated form of Haworthiopsis attenuata.

Growing Haworthiopsis attenuata 'Wide Zebra'

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix with bright filtered light and good airflow. It tolerates some direct sun, although protection from prolonged intense Australian afternoon summer sun helps prevent scorching and excessive discolouration.

Water thoroughly when required, allowing the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Avoid keeping the roots continuously wet. Good light helps maintain compact growth and brings out the strong contrast between the dark foliage and raised white markings.

Mature plants produce slender flower stems carrying numerous small pale flowers with darker longitudinal markings.
