Kalanchoe 'Copper Spoons' (Kalanchoe orgyalis) is a striking succulent known for its velvety, copper-toned foliage and unique growth habit. Native to the dry regions of southern and southwestern Madagascar, Kalanchoe orgyalis thrives in rocky, well-draining soils and adapts well to both indoor and outdoor cultivation. Its oval-shaped leaves have a distinctive colour contrast—rich cinnamon-brown on the upper surface and silvery-grey underneath—creating a stunning visual effect, especially in bright light. Over time, the leaves’ upper surface fades to match the lower, adding further depth to its changing appearance.
This succulent can grow up to 2 metres tall in its natural habitat but remains more compact when grown in pots. Its thick, woody stems are covered in fine hairs, giving the plant a soft, suede-like texture. In late summer to early autumn, Kalanchoe 'Copper Spoons' produces small, tubular, bright yellow flowers in terminal clusters, adding seasonal interest.
Thriving in full to partial sun, this plant develops its most vibrant hues with adequate light exposure. It prefers well-draining soil, such as a quality succulent mix with added sand or perlite, to prevent root rot. Watering should be minimal—allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings—especially during winter dormancy. A light feed in spring and summer supports healthy growth.
Kalanchoe 'Copper Spoons' is well-suited to pots, garden beds, or xeriscapes, providing a bold, textural contrast to other succulents. Its low-maintenance nature and striking foliage make Kalanchoe orgyalis a favourite among collectors and landscape enthusiasts alike.
