Lobivia schieliana
Lobivia schieliana is a striking cactus species native to the rugged terrains of Bolivia and Peru, where it thrives at elevations between 2400 and 3200 meters in regions such as La Paz, Cusco, and Puno. Known for its compact growth habit, this charming plant often forms dense clumps through basal branching, creating an eye-catching display. Its stems are spherical to cylindrical, measuring up to 4.5 cm tall and 3.5 cm in diameter, with a dark green to reddish-green hue that deepens in bright sunlight. The plant's 13–21 ribs are adorned with creamy white, yellowish, or brown spines that interlace into a spidery network, giving it a distinctive texture.
During its blooming season, Lobivia schieliana produces vivid flowers in shades of red, orange, or occasionally yellow. These funnel-shaped blooms reach 4–5 cm in diameter, providing a spectacular contrast against the plant's spiny body. The flowers are accompanied by small, spherical fruits, approximately 1 cm wide, that are juicy and green to blackish in color.
The species thrives in well-drained soils and prefers a bright, sunny position with protection from extreme cold, making it suitable for Australian gardens. Its natural habitat among grasses and boulders on slopes and ridges demonstrates its adaptability to challenging environments. First described by Curt Backeberg in 1957, Lobivia schieliana is named in honor of German cactus enthusiast Wolfgang Schiel, whose passion for these remarkable plants continues to inspire collectors worldwide.

Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
