Mammillaria elongata, also known as the Ladyfinger Cactus or Golden Stars, is a captivating succulent native to central Mexico, specifically the states of Guanajuato, Hidalgo, and Querétaro. This species thrives at altitudes ranging from 1,300 to 2,300 meters above sea level, where it flourishes in calcareous soils within matorral habitats. Despite its limited distribution, it remains abundant, though some subpopulations are threatened by mining, agricultural conversion, and grazing.
This cactus forms dense clusters of elongated, cylindrical stems that grow to about 6 to 15 cm long and 1 to 3 cm in diameter. The bright green stems are adorned with slender, conical tubercles arranged in a perfect spiral. The areoles, initially pubescent, bear 14 to 25 radial spines, which vary in color from white to golden yellow to brown. These spines, interlocking in a star pattern, provide a stunning visual appeal. Occasionally, the plant may produce 2 central spines, typically yellow with dark tips.
In spring, Mammillaria elongata showcases its beauty by producing small, bell-shaped flowers, about 1 cm in diameter. These flowers, often pale yellow or whitish with pinkish hues, bloom on the upper part of the stems. The plant may bloom again later in the year, adding to its charm. Following the flowering season, it bears pink to red cylindrical fruits, containing numerous brown seeds.
This species is a popular choice among succulent enthusiasts, not only for its striking appearance but also for its ease of cultivation. It's worth noting that many cultivated forms are hybrids, particularly with Mammillaria microhelia, adding to the diversity of its appearance. The Mammillaria elongata has even earned the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, a testament to its horticultural value.
Ideal for creating a stunning ground cover or adding texture to succulent arrangements, Mammillaria elongata is a versatile and resilient plant that can thrive in various settings, provided it receives ample sunlight and well-draining soil. Its unique form and vibrant spines make it a standout addition to any collection, bringing a touch of Mexican desert beauty to gardens worldwide.
