Mammillaria Pico 'Dalek', also known as the "Dalek Cactus," is a captivating miniature cactus that reaches a width of approximately 6 cm. Over many years, it forms numerous offsets, creating a tight, appealing cluster up to 10 cm high. Native to Mexico, this charming cactus is a member of the extensive Mammillaria genus, which comprises around 200 species, making it one of the largest in the Cactaceae family.
This compact cactus thrives best in protected, partially shaded outdoor positions or in sunny indoor locations to maintain its distinctive shape and vibrant color. Adequate light is essential for flowering, as Mammillaria Pico 'Dalek' requires good light conditions to bloom. Its small, funnel-shaped flowers range in color from white to pink, adding a delicate touch to its overall appearance.
Watering needs for the 'Dalek' are minimal; it can be watered year-round, with increased growth during the warmer months. Remarkably resilient, this cactus can survive extended periods without water, remaining compact when dry. For optimal growth, feeding with 25% of the recommended fertilizer dosage monthly encourages larger plants, though with reduced coloration.
Repotting can be done during warmer months using any well-drained potting mix, or it can be left to overgrow its pot. Offsets can be easily removed for propagation, though this may leave some scars on the parent plant.
With its unique, nipple-like tubercles, the Mammillaria Pico 'Dalek' stands out not only for its aesthetics but also for its fascinating botanical heritage. Named by Carl Linnaeus in 1753 and described by Adrian Hardy Haworth in 1812, this cactus continues to enchant enthusiasts with its distinctive features and easy care requirements. Perfect for collectors and beginners alike, the 'Dalek' adds a touch of exotic charm to any succulent collection.
