Pachyphytum compactum variegata crested

Pachyphytum compactum variegata crested is an exceptionally uncommon form of the much-loved Mexican succulent commonly known as Little Jewel, combining colourful variegation with the sculptural growth produced by cresting, or fasciation. Instead of developing from a single conventional growing point, the crested stem broadens into a flattened or irregular growth line, producing tightly crowded leaves in fascinating folds, fans and undulating clusters.

The thick, fleshy leaves retain the characteristic compact form of Pachyphytum compactum, but their arrangement becomes increasingly intricate as the crest develops. Variegation adds another dimension, with individual leaves displaying combinations of green, lime, creamy yellow and rich golden-yellow. Some may be predominantly green or yellow, while others develop sectoral or mottled patterns where contrasting colours share the same leaf. Cooler conditions can also bring attractive pink, red or purplish tones to the leaf tips.

Native Pachyphytum compactum originates from rocky, elevated habitats in central Mexico, where its succulent foliage is adapted to storing moisture through periods of dryness. The variegated and crested characteristics are mutations of this naturally compact species. Combining both traits results in plants with considerable individuality, with the shape and distribution of the crest becoming increasingly pronounced as specimens mature.

This form is best grown in bright, indirect light or a well-lit semi-shaded position. The yellow and cream areas contain less chlorophyll than the green portions of the leaves and are consequently more susceptible to sun damage, particularly during the warmer months. Browning or scorching of the yellow variegation is often an early indication that the plant is receiving too much direct sunlight. Winter sun is generally less intense, but protection from strong summer sun is recommended.

Use a very free-draining succulent mix and allow the growing medium to dry well between waterings. Good airflow is beneficial, particularly around the densely packed crested growth, and plants should be protected from significant frost and prolonged wet conditions. Given good indirect light and sensible watering, established specimens grow reliably, although considerably more slowly than ordinary green Pachyphytum compactum.

Propagation for Collectors

One of the particularly interesting characteristics of this plant is its potential for propagation from individual leaves. Healthy variegated leaves removed from the plant can be propagated in much the same way as other Pachyphytum, and may produce new variegated plants. Offspring can develop as individual crowns or multi-headed plants, making leaf propagation a practical way of gradually increasing a collection from a single established specimen.

Leaves originating from crested growth may also produce fasciated offspring. Crested plants have a tendency to reproduce their unusual growth form through vegetative propagation, although the exact form of each new plant cannot be guaranteed. Some offspring may develop conventional growing points, while others can show multi-headed or crested growth. This variability is part of what makes propagating an established crested specimen particularly interesting for experienced collectors.

A Rare Collector's Form

Variegated Pachyphytum compactum is uncommon in cultivation and notably slow growing, often taking several years to develop into a substantial specimen. The crested variegated form is considerably more unusual again, combining two desirable growth characteristics in the same plant and requiring considerable time to build sufficient propagation stock.

Our availability is extremely limited. We have maintained a very small number of these plants for several years to gradually increase our propagation stock and expect to release mature specimens only occasionally. At present, this may be as little as one plant each year. Once the currently available specimen is sold, another may not be offered until the following year or until sufficient stock has developed.

For the serious succulent collector, this is a plant that rewards patience. Its slow-growing crest becomes increasingly sculptural with age, while the combination of yellow variegation, multi-headed growth and the potential to propagate further unusual plants makes each mature specimen quite individual.
