Parodia scopa albispina var. minima

Regular price $19.95

Parodia scopa albispina var. minima is a delightful miniature cactus, admired for its fine, snowy-white spines and attractive clusters of small green stems. Its delicate, frosted appearance makes it a charming addition to any collection of unusual and compact-growing cacti.

Beautiful Snowy-White Spines

The outstanding feature of this cactus is its dense covering of fine white spines, which radiate from closely spaced, woolly areoles across the surface of each stem. These delicate spines create a soft, almost fluffy appearance, with glimpses of green beneath the white covering highlighting the plant's ribbed structure.

Viewed from above, the spines form attractive circular patterns around the growing points, giving each head a distinctive, finely textured appearance.

Miniature Heads and Clustering Growth

The form known in cultivation as 'minima' is particularly valued for its relatively small individual stems and compact growth habit. Young heads are generally rounded, becoming slightly elongated as they mature.

One of its most appealing characteristics is its tendency to produce numerous offsets around the original stem. Over time, these develop into an increasingly dense colony of closely packed heads, creating an attractive mound that gradually expands as the plant matures.

Its compact proportions make it especially suitable for decorative pots, miniature cactus displays and specialist collections where unusual growth habits can be appreciated up close.

Origins and Beautiful Yellow Flowers

Parodia scopa is a South American cactus species native to parts of southern Brazil and Uruguay, where it grows in rocky, well-drained habitats. It was formerly classified under the genus Notocactus, a name still commonly encountered among cactus enthusiasts.

The white-spined forms are particularly attractive in cultivation, although the name 'minima' is used horticulturally and its precise botanical classification is not firmly established.

Under favourable conditions, mature plants may produce beautiful, silky yellow flowers near the crowns of their stems, generally during the warmer growing season. These cheerful blooms provide a lovely contrast against the pale spination.

Growing Parodia scopa albispina var. minima

This miniature cactus grows well in bright light and can adapt to sunny conditions when gradually acclimatised. Adequate sunlight encourages firm, compact growth and healthy spine development, although plants previously grown in sheltered conditions should be introduced gradually to stronger sunlight.

Grow in a gritty, free-draining cactus potting mix and water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the soil to dry appropriately between waterings. Although Parodia species appreciate regular watering during warmer weather, prolonged moisture around the roots should be avoided.

Reduce watering during the cooler winter months, particularly when growth has slowed. A cool, relatively dry winter rest may encourage flowering in mature plants. Protect from frost and prolonged cold, wet conditions, and maintain good airflow around the stems.

With its beautiful white spination, charming miniature heads and attractive growth habit, Parodia scopa albispina var. minima is a rewarding cactus that becomes increasingly impressive with age.

Seasonal Colour & Plant Variation

Succulents naturally change in colour, size and form throughout the year. Many develop richer colours and more compact growth during periods of seasonal stress, particularly through cooler months and brighter conditions, while warmer or lower-light conditions may produce greener, softer growth.

The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
