Rebutia Krainziana var inermis
Rebutia krainziana var. inermis is a rare spineless form of a small high-altitude Bolivian cactus, admired by collectors for its smooth, almost naked appearance and its spectacular spring flowering display. Often associated with the Rebutia pygmaea group, this unusual variety forms compact clusters of dark green globular stems that can develop rich purple tones under bright light and cooler conditions. Its near lack of spines gives the plant a soft, sculptural appearance rarely seen in cacti, making it especially appealing for collectors of unusual and visually distinctive species.
Growing to around 5 cm wide and up to 7 cm tall, this miniature cactus gradually offsets to create attractive clumping colonies over time. One of its more fascinating botanical features is the occasional presence of tiny vestigial leaf-like scales on the tubercles — an ancestral characteristic that offers a glimpse into the evolutionary history of cacti. During spring and early summer, mature plants produce an abundance of large funnel-shaped flowers in vivid shades of scarlet, orange-red or deep coral, often almost covering the body of the plant.
Rebutia krainziana var. inermis thrives in a bright position with good airflow and excellent drainage. A sharply draining cactus or mineral-based succulent mix is ideal. Water moderately during active growth, allowing the soil to dry fully between watering, then keep almost completely dry through winter dormancy. In Australian conditions it performs particularly well in covered outdoor areas, bright patios, greenhouses and sunny windowsills protected from prolonged heavy rain and severe frost.
Its combination of rarity, unusual spineless form and brilliant flowering habit makes this a highly rewarding cactus for both collectors and beginners seeking something a little different.
