Sedeveria Maialen, scientifically known as ×Sedeveria 'Maialen,' is a stunning succulent hybrid with an intriguing blend of Echeveria and Sedum characteristics. This resilient plant boasts a rosette-shaped leaf arrangement that can exhibit a range of colors, from vibrant green to striking orange. As the temperature cools, Maialen undergoes a captivating transformation, with the tips of its leaves turning orange and gradually spreading throughout the plant.

The appearance of Sedeveria Maialen can vary depending on its growing conditions. When cultivated in full sun, it tends to develop shorter, stubbier leaves, while plants in shaded areas may exhibit longer and more spread-out foliage.

Reaching a height of approximately 20 cm, Sedeveria Maialen often leans and, as it matures, its rosettes may cascade and trail along the ground. Each individual rosette can grow up to 10 cm in diameter, although this may vary depending on the specific environmental conditions.

One of the notable characteristics of Sedeveria Maialen is its prolific offset production. Once mature, this plant can produce more than 10 offsets per year. If left attached, these offsets will form clumps of rosettes and can spread a considerable distance, especially when grown in high-quality potting mix or soil. While new offsets typically emerge from the base of a stalk, they can also appear midway along the stalk.

Flowering annually, usually at the end of winter or early spring, Sedeveria Maialen adorns itself with clusters of bell-shaped, yellow blooms that emerge on tall stalks. A single rosette can give rise to multiple flower stalks, attracting beneficial insects like the hoverfly.

Sedeveria Maialen thrives in various conditions and is renowned for its hardiness. Established plants and those grown in the ground require minimal care. While young plants can be vulnerable to sunburn in temperatures exceeding 35°C (95°F), mature Maialen specimens can withstand even higher temperatures, up to 40°C (104°F). For optimal display of its brilliant orange hues, it is advisable to position the plant in full sun during most of the year, with morning sun and afternoon shade in hot summers.

Although Sedeveria Maialen is not frost-hardy, it can tolerate temperatures as low as 1°C (33°F) when grown outdoors. However, during frosty periods, it should be brought indoors. If planted in a sunny garden spot, Maialen displays increased resilience, enduring higher temperatures and requiring less frequent watering.

To ensure the best growth and abundant offsets, it is recommended to repot Sedeveria Maialen in fresh succulent potting mix annually. Avoid using black pots exposed to full sun in hot summers, as they can increase the heat around the root area. While this succulent can survive in any potting mix, opting for high-quality succulent potting mix will yield healthier, larger, and more beautiful plants. Neglecting to provide adequate potting mix and pot size may result in stunted growth and minimal offset production.

In terms of propagation, Sedeveria Maialen can be easily propagated through offsets, leaves, or seeds. Taking cuttings of offsets is the quickest and most straightforward method. Leaves also root readily, sprouting new plants in less than two weeks during the growing season.

This versatile succulent requires direct sunlight for at least four hours per day, making it unsuitable for indoor growth unless supplemented with professional plant-growing lights or in a sunroom.

While Sedeveria Maialen shares susceptibility to common succulent pests such as mealy bugs, aphids, and snails/slugs, regular checks and appropriate pest management measures will keep these nuisances at bay.

In summary, Sedeveria Maialen is a captivating succulent hybrid with eye-catching rosettes that showcase a delightful color spectrum. Its ability to thrive in diverse conditions, combined with its prolific offset production and alluring flowers, makes it a must-have addition to any garden or succulent collection. Whether grown in pots or planted directly in the garden, Sedeveria Maialen brings beauty and resilience to any space.
