Sedeveria 'Shangri La'

Sedeveria 'Shangri La' is an attractive, freely clustering succulent prized for its plump foliage, compact rosettes and beautiful seasonal colour. Thick, rounded to club-shaped leaves emerge fresh green and can develop warm yellow, peach, orange and red tones under brighter light and cooler conditions, with the tips often colouring most strongly. As the plant matures it produces numerous offsets, gradually developing into a wonderfully full, multi-headed specimen.

Plump Foliage & Seasonal Colour

One of the most appealing features of Sedeveria 'Shangri La' is the shape of its leaves. They are noticeably thick and fleshy, with softly rounded ends that give each rosette a substantial, almost pebble-like appearance. Colour is naturally variable throughout the year, with plants often becoming predominantly green during periods of active, softer growth before developing warmer yellow, peach, orange and reddish tones as conditions change.

Brighter light, cooler temperatures and relatively lean growing conditions can encourage stronger colour while helping the rosettes remain compact. This seasonal transformation means the same plant can display quite different colouring at different times of the year.

A Compact, Freely Clustering Succulent

'Shangri La' offsets readily, with new rosettes developing around established growth and eventually forming dense clusters. Older plants can develop short stems beneath the rosettes, allowing the numerous heads to spread outward and create an attractive mounded or gently cascading effect around the edge of a container.

The cultivar is widely grown under the name Sedeveria 'Shangri La', although its precise breeding history and parentage do not appear to have been reliably documented. It has sometimes been suggested in cultivation that Sedum clavatum may be involved in its ancestry, but without a confirmed breeding record this is best regarded as possible rather than established parentage.

Beautiful White Flower Clusters

Mature plants can produce an impressive floral display, sending up stems topped with clusters of small, star-shaped white flowers. Against the plump green to warm-toned foliage, the massed blooms create a particularly attractive contrast and can temporarily transform an established plant into a surprisingly floriferous display.

Growing Sedeveria 'Shangri La'

Grow 'Shangri La' in a bright position with good airflow and a very free-draining succulent mix. Good light encourages compact rosettes and stronger seasonal colour, although plants should be acclimatised gradually and protected from excessively harsh Australian summer afternoon sun where scorching is likely.

Water thoroughly when required, then allow the growing medium to dry well before watering again. Avoid continually wet soil and excessive fertilisation, as overly rich conditions can encourage softer, more elongated growth at the expense of the compact form and colour for which this cultivar is valued.

'Shangri La' is particularly well suited to pots, mixed succulent displays and sheltered rockeries, where its clustering habit can be appreciated as the plant matures. Protect from prolonged or severe frost and reduce watering during periods when growth has noticeably slowed.

An Easy Succulent with Plenty of Character

With its chunky foliage, generous production of offsets, changing seasonal colours and masses of delicate white flowers, Sedeveria 'Shangri La' becomes increasingly attractive as it matures. Young plants are appealing in their own right, but established multi-headed specimens show this cultivar at its best, forming dense colonies of colourful, plump rosettes with considerable character.
