Sedum adolphi (commonly known as Golden Sedum or Golden Glow Sedum) is a striking succulent native to the rocky terrains and cliff faces of Veracruz, Mexico. Renowned for its vibrant golden to coppery-yellow foliage, this plant adds a splash of colour to any garden or container arrangement. With its sprawling growth habit, Sedum adolphi typically reaches up to 30 cm in height, forming dense clusters of succulent stems adorned with fleshy, lanceolate to obovate leaves. These leaves, which can grow up to 3 cm long, take on brilliant orange-red hues when exposed to direct sunlight, making it a perfect choice for sun-drenched gardens or hanging baskets.

In late winter through to spring, Sedum adolphi produces charming, star-shaped white flowers in flat-topped clusters known as cymes. These delicate blooms have a light fragrance, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies, which add to the appeal of this hardy succulent. Despite its showy blooms, this species is primarily admired for its striking foliage, which provides year-round visual interest.

This easy-to-grow plant thrives in full sun and prefers well-draining soil. It’s particularly well-suited to outdoor gardens, rockeries, or as a companion plant in succulent arrangements. Sedum adolphi requires minimal water once established, making it ideal for low-maintenance gardeners. It’s best to allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to avoid overwatering, a common mistake with succulents.

Golden Sedum is not only hardy in dry conditions but can withstand temperatures exceeding 20°C and occasional windy spots. While it can be propagated through leaves, cuttings, or seeds, it is most easily multiplied by snipping off healthy stems and replanting them.

It is important to note that the name is often incorrectly spelled as Sedum Adolphii with an extra “i.” However, the correct spelling is Sedum adolphi, reflecting its Latinized reference to the botanist Adolf Engler. This single “i” is the proper genitive form, and the error likely stems from confusion with the common spelling of personal names in botanical nomenclature.

Unlike some other succulent species, Sedum adolphi is not considered toxic to pets, making it a safe addition to family gardens. Whether you're a seasoned succulent enthusiast or a beginner, Sedum adolphi offers an easy-care, vibrant option that brings year-round beauty to your outdoor space.
