Sedum dasyphyllum 'Lilac Mound'

Sedum dasyphyllum 'Lilac Mound', often simply called Sedum 'Lilac Mound', is a compact, spreading stonecrop distinguished by its tiny, plump leaves and beautiful seasonal colouring. Closely packed, branching stems develop into dense, softly rounded mounds that gradually spread across the soil or cascade over the edges of containers. This versatile growth habit makes it particularly well suited to rockeries, miniature gardens, troughs, hanging baskets, living walls and mixed succulent arrangements.

Beautiful seasonal colour

The foliage of Sedum dasyphyllum 'Lilac Mound' can change considerably with the seasons and growing conditions. New growth may emerge in fresh green to blue-green tones, while more mature foliage develops shades of blue-grey, lilac, lavender, mauve, pink and purple. Several of these colours can be present on the same plant at once, creating the softly blended pastel appearance characteristic of this cultivar.

Brighter light, cooler temperatures and drier conditions generally encourage stronger pink, lilac and purple colouring, while plants in active growth with more regular moisture tend to become greener. The individual leaves are remarkably small, rounded and slightly fleshy, with a subtle glaucous surface that contributes to their muted blue-grey and pastel tones.

Flowers

During the flowering season, slender stems rise above the compact foliage carrying clusters of small, star-shaped flowers. Pinkish buds open to reveal delicate white petals with creamy-yellow centres. The flowers are small, but when produced in numbers they create a delicate display above the colourful foliage.

Hardy and easy to propagate

Like many stonecrops, Sedum dasyphyllum 'Lilac Mound' is remarkably resilient once established. Its spreading stems readily produce roots, while detached pieces can establish quickly when placed onto suitable growing media. Even individual leaves are capable of producing new plants, making this an easy Sedum to propagate and allowing established plants to gradually develop into broader mats.

This ability to regenerate also helps the plant recover if sections are damaged or roots are lost. Small pieces that break away during handling can often simply be placed back onto a free-draining succulent mix, where they may take root and continue growing.

Growing Sedum 'Lilac Mound'

Grow in a free-draining succulent or cactus mix in a bright position with good airflow. It performs well in bright light to full sun, although some protection from intense afternoon sun can be beneficial during periods of extreme Australian summer heat, particularly for plants grown in small containers.

Allow the growing medium to dry between waterings and avoid keeping the plant continually wet. Once established, it is drought tolerant, although occasional watering during extended dry periods will help maintain healthy growth. Brighter light and slightly drier conditions generally encourage the compact growth and lilac-purple colouring for which this cultivar is known.

With its miniature foliage, spreading habit and changing seasonal colours, Sedum dasyphyllum 'Lilac Mound' is particularly useful wherever a fine-textured, low-growing succulent is required. It can be allowed to form a dense groundcover, tucked into small spaces between rocks and larger succulents, or grown near the edge of a container where its stems can gradually spill over the side.

Explore other forms of Sedum dasyphyllum

Sedum dasyphyllum is a highly variable species, with naturally occurring populations differing in leaf size and shape, colour, surface texture and growth habit. Numerous distinctive forms and varieties have been described over the years, while cultivated selections add even more diversity. This remarkable variation makes Sedum dasyphyllum an especially interesting species for succulent collectors, as different forms can appear surprisingly different despite belonging to the same species.

We currently grow four distinctly different forms, including 'Lilac Mound' featured on this page. You can also explore Sedum dasyphyllum 'Major', a larger and more robust form; Sedum dasyphyllum var. glanduliferum 'Fuzzy Wuzzy', a distinctive hairy form; and Sedum dasyphyllum 'Minor', a particularly compact miniature form with fine foliage and beautiful seasonal colouring.

Growing several forms together is an excellent way to appreciate the diversity found within this fascinating species.

Seasonal Colour & Plant Variation

Succulents naturally change in colour, size and form throughout the year. Many develop richer colours and more compact growth during periods of seasonal stress, particularly through cooler months and brighter conditions, while warmer or lower-light conditions may produce greener, softer growth.

The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
