Sedum makinoi 'Tundra Tornado' is a colourful, low-growing succulent admired for its compact, spiralling foliage and beautiful combination of fresh green, copper and reddish-bronze tones. Sedum makinoi is a perennial succulent native to Japan, Korea and parts of China, where it naturally grows among rocks and in sheltered, well-drained locations. 'Tundra Tornado' is a cultivated selection distinguished by its compact growth and densely arranged foliage.

Unlike the predominantly green foliage of the typical species, 'Tundra Tornado' develops attractive reddish-brown to coppery tones, particularly on mature leaves and stems. Fresh growth often emerges bright green, creating a striking contrast with the older foliage. Colour intensity varies with sunlight, temperature and seasonal growing conditions.

Growth Habit & Seasonal Colour

This compact, spreading Sedum produces numerous branching stems that gradually extend beyond the pot, creating a softly cascading appearance. Its tightly arranged leaves form small, rounded clusters along the stems, making it particularly attractive in shallow containers, hanging pots and mixed succulent arrangements.

Under suitable conditions, established plants can develop into dense, spreading mats. Bright light encourages compact growth and stronger bronze colouring, while plants grown in softer light generally retain more green foliage.

During the warmer months, mature plants may produce clusters of small, star-shaped yellow flowers. These delicate blooms provide a cheerful contrast against the darker foliage and may attract small pollinating insects.

Growing Sedum makinoi 'Tundra Tornado'

Grow 'Tundra Tornado' in bright light with some direct morning sunlight. In cooler Australian regions, established plants can tolerate more sun, while protection from intense afternoon heat is beneficial during hot summers.

Plant in a free-draining succulent potting mix and water thoroughly when the growing medium begins to dry. Although reasonably drought tolerant once established, this small-leaved Sedum generally appreciates more consistent moisture during active growth than thick-leaved desert succulents. Avoid prolonged waterlogging, particularly during cold weather.

This adaptable succulent is suitable for pots, hanging baskets, rock gardens and well-drained groundcover plantings. It tolerates cool conditions but benefits from protection against prolonged winter wetness and severe frost, particularly when grown in small containers.

Handling on Arrival

Once unpacked, place your plant in a bright, protected position and allow it to settle. Water when appropriate for the condition of the roots and growing medium. Healthy plants will generally regain their firmness within a few days as they rehydrate and resume normal growth.
