Sedum spurium 'Tricolor' is a delightful, low-growing, herbaceous perennial that belongs to the family Crassulaceae. It is also known as Caucasian stonecrop and two-row stonecrop, and is native to the Caucusus. This plant is a perfect choice for gardeners who want to add color and texture to their garden beds, borders, and containers.

The foliage of Sedum spurium 'Tricolor' is the main attraction. The leaves are thick, succulent, and opposite, with a wedge-shaped base and toothed near the tips. The leaves are medium green with reddish-tinged margins, and have a tri-colored effect with green in the center and white and pink around the edges. The newer leaves near the stem tips are evergreen, while the lower stem leaves are deciduous, but typically turn deep burgundy in autumn for overwintering.

This stonecrop grows 8-15cm tall and spreads 30-45cm wide by creeping, branching stems that root easily at the nodes. This plant produces tiny, 5-petaled, star-shaped, pink flowers in dense, 4-branched inflorescences atop upright reddish flower stems from late spring to mid summer. These flowers are attractive to butterflies and add to the plant's charm.

Sedum spurium 'Tricolor' is a hardy plant that grows well in full sun and prefers well-drained soils with good soil drainage to perform well. This plant is drought tolerant and can tolerate poor soils, making it an excellent choice for gardeners who want to add color to sunny, dry areas.

This stonecrop is low maintenance and can be easily propagated by cuttings or division. It spreads easily and may be planted 30cm apart when grown as a ground cover. It is also deer and rabbit tolerant and can tolerate air pollution.

Overall, Sedum spurium 'Tricolor' is an excellent ground cover or naturalizer for sunny areas of the garden, and its colorful foliage is a lovely addition to any garden bed, border, or container. It is a great choice for gardeners looking for a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plant that is easy to grow and attractive to butterflies.
