Sempervivum caucasicum – an enchanting addition to any succulent collection – is a hardy, mat-forming succulent known for its charming rosettes and exceptional resilience. Native to the rugged Caucasus Mountains, this member of the Crassulaceae family flourishes in alpine and subalpine zones, thriving in sandy, calcareous soils and rocky slopes, even at elevations of up to 2,600 metres. With its fascinating adaptability, this plant is particularly well-suited to Australian gardens, especially those with rocky outcrops or limited soil depth.
Each rosette of Sempervivum caucasicum grows up to 3.5 cm in diameter, with leaves that are smooth to slightly hairy and a rich green hue that intensifies under sunlight, sometimes showing reddish-brown tips. The plant produces striking offsets, creating a lush ground cover over time. In summer, Sempervivum caucasicum graces the garden with star-shaped, rose-red flowers on slender stalks up to 20 cm tall, each bloom accentuated by purple stripes and reddish anthers.
Beyond its captivating appearance, Sempervivum caucasicum supports local biodiversity by providing nectar for pollinators like bees and small insects. It’s also low-maintenance, withstanding temperatures as low as -20°C, though it thrives best in full sun or partial shade with a well-draining, gritty soil mix. For succulent lovers and eco-conscious gardeners alike, Sempervivum caucasicum offers both beauty and resilience, making it an excellent choice for gardens and rockeries alike.
