Sempervivum ‘Centennial’ Crest is a captivating and unusual form of the hardy houseleek, prized for its sculptural, fan-shaped growth that twists and undulates rather than forming the classic rosette typical of Sempervivums. Originating from alpine regions of Europe, this cultivar represents a fascinating crested mutation of Sempervivum ‘Centennial’, a hybrid known for its rich magenta tones that shift to green towards the centre. In its crested form, the plant develops a broad, contorted ridge that resembles coral or a miniature mountain range, giving it an almost architectural quality as it matures.

The foliage of Sempervivum ‘Centennial’ Crest ranges from dusky purple and wine-red to silvery green, with colour intensity deepening under full sun or during cooler weather. Each undulating crest can grow to around 8–12 cm across, slowly expanding into a dense, irregular cluster over time. Like its parent form, it remains evergreen and resilient, tolerating frost, drought, and neglect once established. While standard Sempervivums produce offsets or “chicks” freely, crested forms may divide along their crest lines instead, creating intricate, sculptural colonies.

This unique succulent is exceptionally well-suited to Australian conditions, thriving in bright sunlight and gritty, fast-draining soil. It performs beautifully in rock gardens, troughs, or shallow containers where its contorted form can be fully appreciated. Water sparingly, allowing the mix to dry between soakings, as excessive moisture may cause rot. Sempervivum ‘Centennial’ Crest is fully cold-hardy across most Australian climates and makes an excellent collector’s specimen—its ever-changing shape and colour ensure no two plants are ever alike, making it a living work of natural art in any succulent collection.
