Sempervivum 'Grey Lady'
Sempervivum 'Grey Lady' (Vaughn) is a mid-sized perennial succulent admired for its striking silver-green rosettes, which can shift to blush pink or deep wine-red hues under temperature variations or seasonal dormancy. This unique cultivar is hybridized from the classic S. 'Silverine,' offering a refined contrast to red or purple-toned Sempervivum varieties. Its leaves, lined with delicate cilia and coated in a natural epicuticular wax, create an appealing wavy watermark effect that adds visual depth to the rosette's ovate, pointed form.
This hardy succulent is well-suited to Australian gardens, thriving in cool to temperate climates with frosty winters. With a natural resilience to drought, heat, and neglect, it is particularly suited for low-maintenance gardening. It grows actively during spring and autumn, requiring full to partial sun exposure to maintain its tight rosette shape and vivid colouring. In summer, ‘Grey Lady’ may benefit from afternoon shade and increased airflow to prevent rot, as high temperatures can sometimes make it prone to moisture issues.
Growing in well-draining, gritty soil enhances its health, and a mix of peat with coarse granules replicates its mountainous origins. For best results, water sparingly, allowing soil to dry between sessions, and consider bottom-watering to avoid crown rot. Over time, this cultivar forms clusters of offsets, or “chicks,” which can remain clustered for a lush display or be shared with others to spread its enduring beauty.

Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
