Sempervivum 'Icicle' is a striking succulent plant with a medium-sized rosette that boasts ruby red leaves with a fuzzy white tuft at each leaf tip. This hardy perennial produces numerous offsets or "chicks" on stolons, forming a mounding clump. The grey-green colored leaves have a red backing and cobweb hairs, with a bright green center in some seasons and more lavender tones in winter. Short spikes of pastel flowers appear in summer.
This plant, commonly known as "hen and chicks," thrives in full sun and well-draining, gritty soils, making it an ideal choice for rock gardens, dry stone walls, or planted in pots. It is incredibly drought tolerant after it establishes itself, requiring only infrequent watering. It is also very frost hardy, and in some areas of the world, it has been traditionally planted on rooftops.
Sempervivum 'Icicle' will do most of its growing in spring and summer, thriving with weekly watering and afternoon shade if temperatures exceed 80°F. It is important to protect this plant from heavy rains and standing water to prevent rot. As this plant grows into a wider clump, it is more likely to start flowering, with the rosettes that have the flowers dying after flowering, while the rest of the clump continues to grow and fill in the spaces.
Propagation of this plant is relatively easy, as cutting one of the "chicks" from the parent clump in early summer is the best way to start a new plant. These chicks may already have roots of their own, so they can quickly establish themselves in their new location.
Overall, Sempervivum 'Icicle' is an eye-catching plant that is low maintenance and perfect for anyone looking to add a touch of color and texture to their garden or living space.
