Sempervivum 'Little Darling' is a charming monocarpic succulent that forms a compact rosette of fleshy leaves measuring around 8 cm in diameter. The leaves are light green towards the tips, with a lovely burgundy-red coloring towards the base of the leaf, creating a striking contrast. The transition area between the two colors has a delicate pinkish blush, adding further interest to this already beautiful plant. The leaves end in a fine point, giving the rosette a delicate appearance.
Like all Sempervivums, 'Little Darling' is a hardy plant, with a natural distribution across a wide range of altitudes from Morocco to Iran. They are also known as Houseleeks or Hen and Chicks and are characterized by their ability to produce offsets around the parent rosette, creating mats of rosettes that seem to live forever.
To ensure that Sempervivum 'Little Darling' thrives, it should be grown in full sun for most of the year to bring out the vibrant colors of the leaves fully, but it will grow better and stay more vibrant when protected from the hot afternoon sun over summer. They prefer a well-draining soil mix with added sand, gravel, perlite, or pumice. 'Little Darling' is extremely frost-resistant, making it a popular choice for rock gardens and xeriscaping. It can handle temperatures down to -30°C, so it's perfect for cold climates.
Overall, Sempervivum 'Little Darling' is a stunning and hardy plant that will add a touch of charm to any garden or container. Its striking coloring and delicate appearance make it an excellent choice for those looking to add interest and texture to their outdoor space.
