Sempervivum 'Mahogany'

Sempervivum 'Mahogany' is a striking hardy succulent valued for its bold, symmetrical rosettes and remarkably variable seasonal colouring. Its fleshy, pointed leaves have an underlying green to blue-green colour that can become increasingly overlaid with burgundy, purple and deep mahogany tones as growing conditions change.

Rich Mahogany Colour

One of the most appealing features of Sempervivum 'Mahogany' is just how dramatically its colour can change. During periods of active growth, particularly when moisture is readily available and conditions are less stressful, the rosettes may display considerably more green and blue-green through the centre and leaves. The contrasting burgundy and mahogany pigmentation often begins around the tips and upper portions of the foliage before becoming progressively stronger.

With increased sunlight and other natural environmental stresses, the darker pigmentation can intensify considerably, spreading further across the leaves and producing the rich mahogany, burgundy and deep purple colouring for which this cultivar is named. Plants receiving less direct sun generally remain greener and more blue-green. As with many Sempervivums, colour can therefore vary substantially with season, light intensity, temperature, moisture and growing conditions.

This natural variability means the same plant can look remarkably different throughout the year. From fresh green and blue-green growth with burgundy tips through to heavily coloured rosettes dominated by deep mahogany and purple, 'Mahogany' provides an ever-changing display.

Growth & Offsets

'Mahogany' develops neat rosettes that readily produce offsets, gradually forming attractive clusters around the original plant. As the colony matures, the combination of different-sized rosettes and changing foliage colours creates an impressive display, particularly in shallow pots, rockeries, gravel gardens and mixed Sempervivum collections.

The offsets can be left attached to develop into a natural colony or separated once sufficiently established to produce additional plants.

Flowers & the Sempervivum Life Cycle

Mature rosettes may eventually produce upright leafy flower stems topped with clusters of star-shaped pale pink flowers during the warmer months. The flowers provide another attractive seasonal feature and are visited by bees and other beneficial insects.

Like other Sempervivums, each individual rosette is monocarpic, meaning it flowers once and then gradually dies. The surrounding offsets continue growing and replace the flowering rosette, allowing an established colony to continue for many years. Once flowering has finished, the spent flower stem and declining rosette can simply be removed.

Growing Sempervivum 'Mahogany'

Sempervivum 'Mahogany' performs best outdoors in a bright, sunny position with excellent drainage. Strong light encourages compact growth and helps develop the intense burgundy and mahogany pigmentation characteristic of this cultivar. Plants grown with more moisture or less direct sunlight will generally display softer green to blue-green colouring, while those exposed to stronger light and somewhat drier conditions can develop considerably deeper colour.

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix and allow the growing medium to dry between waterings. Once established, 'Mahogany' is drought tolerant and remarkably resistant to cold and frost. Prolonged wet conditions, particularly during cool weather, are generally a greater concern than low temperatures, making excellent drainage and airflow especially important.

In very hot Australian locations, some protection from extreme afternoon summer sun can be beneficial, particularly for plants grown in small pots. Otherwise, this is a tough, low-maintenance succulent ideally suited to outdoor cultivation.

Changing Colour Through the Seasons

The special appeal of Sempervivum 'Mahogany' lies not only in its beautifully structured rosettes but also in its ability to continually change appearance. Light, temperature, available moisture and other growing conditions all influence its colouring, allowing shades of green and blue-green to mingle with burgundy, purple and increasingly deep mahogany. This changing character makes every stage of growth interesting and ensures established plants can present a very different display from one season to the next.
