Sempervivum 'Mahogany' is a striking, cold-hardy succulent known for its compact rosettes and rich colour contrasts that change with the seasons. This evergreen perennial forms tight, symmetrical clumps of fleshy, obovate leaves with green to yellow-green centres and deep burgundy tips. The colour deepens in cooler temperatures, adding rich mahogany tones to garden beds, rockeries, and container arrangements.
In summer, mature rosettes send up short, leafy stalks bearing clusters of pale pink, star-shaped flowers. Like all Sempervivums, âMahoganyâ is monocarpicâeach rosette dies after flowering, but it will have already produced numerous offsets to continue the colony. This clumping habit makes it ideal as a ground cover or for filling crevices in rock walls, and it's perfectly suited to Australian alpine and temperate regions, tolerating frost and even light snow.
Native to mountainous regions of Europe, Sempervivumsâcommonly called âhens and chicksââare drought tolerant and thrive in free-draining soil with plenty of sun. 'Mahogany' is a standout cultivar for those seeking bold foliage colour, structural form, and easy-care appeal. Its low maintenance needs and adaptability make it a rewarding addition to succulent collections, especially for gardeners wanting year-round interest with minimal fuss.
