Sempervivum 'Marland Beauty'

Sempervivum ‘Marland Beauty’ is an attractive rosette-forming succulent particularly valued for its dramatic seasonal colour changes. Its tightly arranged foliage can shift through combinations of fresh green, yellow-green, red and deeper burgundy tones, giving established plants a noticeably different appearance at different times of the year.

Changing seasonal colour

One of the defining characteristics of ‘Marland Beauty’ is the way its foliage responds to changing light, temperature and growing conditions. Rosettes may display predominantly green leaves with contrasting red tips at one stage, then develop much stronger red colouring while retaining fresh green to yellow-green towards the leaf tips or centres.

At times the colours can develop a mottled or marbled appearance rather than forming sharply defined bands, adding further variation between individual rosettes. These natural changes are part of the appeal of Sempervivum, with the same plant capable of looking quite different as the seasons progress.

Rosettes, offsets and spreading growth

Like other Sempervivum, ‘Marland Beauty’ grows as compact, symmetrical rosettes of fleshy pointed leaves. Healthy, actively growing plants can produce offsets, or “chicks”, quite freely around the parent plant, gradually developing into broader clusters. This characteristic growth habit is the origin of the familiar common name Hen and Chicks.

The low, spreading form makes ‘Marland Beauty’ particularly well suited to rockeries, gravel gardens, pots and mixed succulent plantings, where groups of differently sized rosettes can gradually fill the available space.

Flowers and the Sempervivum life cycle

Sempervivum rosettes are monocarpic, meaning that if an individual rosette flowers, that rosette will die afterwards. Flowering can be quite sporadic, however, and many rosettes may grow for years without flowering. Healthy, actively growing plants generally produce offsets freely, allowing the clump to continue even if an older rosette eventually flowers.

In our nursery we have also occasionally seen younger plants flower when they have been under prolonged stress. For this reason, we recommend keeping plants actively growing and allowing some of their naturally produced offsets to establish. These can also be separated and grown on as new plants.

Growing Sempervivum ‘Marland Beauty’

Grow in a very free-draining succulent mix in a bright, sunny position. Good light encourages compact rosettes and stronger seasonal colour, making ‘Marland Beauty’ particularly well suited to sunny outdoor pots and rockeries.

Water thoroughly when required, allowing the growing medium to dry between waterings. Although Sempervivum are remarkably hardy succulents, excellent drainage remains important, particularly during prolonged cool or wet weather. Avoid allowing plants to remain continually waterlogged.
