Sempervivum 'More Honey'

Sempervivum 'More Honey' is a beautifully coloured heritage cultivar introduced by American Sempervivum breeder Edward Skrocki in 1980. Valued for its fresh green rosettes, warm honey-toned colouring and striking seasonal transformations, this hardy cultivar develops an especially attractive contrast between its cool green foliage and warmer shades of honey, rose, orange-red and burgundy.

History & Seasonal Colour

Introduced by Edward Skrocki in the United States in 1980, 'More Honey' has remained in cultivation for more than four decades. Its name is particularly fitting when the warm honey, pink and rose tones develop through the foliage.

The fleshy, neatly arranged leaves are predominantly fresh green to sea-green, with fine silvery cilia along their margins. Depending on season and growing conditions, the outer leaves and tips can develop orange-red, rose and warm honey tones, while colder conditions can bring out a considerably deeper burgundy flush.

This seasonal transformation is one of the most appealing characteristics of 'More Honey'. Plants may appear predominantly fresh green at one time of year before developing much richer red and burgundy colouring as temperatures and light conditions change.

Growth & Offsets

'More Honey' develops substantial, symmetrical rosettes that gradually produce offsets to form an attractive colony. In spring, young rosettes may appear on elongated pink stolons, creating an additional splash of colour around the established plant before the offsets settle and develop their own roots.

Its strong architectural form makes it particularly effective in shallow pots, rockeries, gravel gardens and mixed Sempervivum collections, where its changing colours can provide interest throughout the year.

Flowers & the Sempervivum Life Cycle

Mature rosettes may eventually produce upright flower stems carrying clusters of star-shaped pink to reddish-pink flowers. These summer blooms are attractive to bees and other beneficial insects.

Like other Sempervivums, each individual rosette is monocarpic, meaning it flowers once and then gradually dies. The surrounding offsets continue growing and replace the flowering rosette, allowing an established colony to continue for many years. Once flowering has finished, the spent flower stem and declining rosette can simply be removed.

Growing Sempervivum 'More Honey'

Sempervivum 'More Honey' is an exceptionally hardy outdoor succulent that performs best in a bright, sunny position with excellent drainage. Plenty of light encourages tight, compact rosettes and helps develop its strongest seasonal colouring.

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix and allow the growing medium to dry between waterings. Established plants tolerate dry conditions and frost remarkably well. As with most Sempervivums, prolonged wet conditions are generally more troublesome than cold weather, particularly during winter, so good drainage and airflow are important.

In very hot parts of Australia, some protection from extreme afternoon summer sun can help prevent scorching, particularly where plants are grown in small pots. Otherwise, 'More Honey' is an easy and rewarding outdoor succulent requiring very little attention once established.
