Sempervivum ‘Onyx’ is a strikingly dark, large-rosetted hen-and-chicks succulent prized for its glossy, near-black foliage and refined architectural form. A member of the Crassulaceae family, this hardy alpine plant originates from the mountainous regions of Europe, where it evolved to thrive in rocky, free-draining soils and intense sunlight. Its bold, sculptural rosettes can grow up to 20 cm across, forming dense clusters of offsets (“chicks”) that gradually carpet the soil surface with rich, jewel-toned foliage.

Each rosette is composed of thick, triangular leaves in shades of deep plum, mahogany, and blackish-purple that appear almost metallic under bright light. Cooler temperatures or strong sun intensify its pigmentation, producing dramatic colour contrast in the garden year-round. As the plant matures, the leaf edges may curl slightly inward, adding extra depth and texture to its symmetrical form.

In late spring to summer, mature rosettes may send up a short flowering stem bearing star-shaped blooms in soft pink to crimson tones — a charming contrast to the dark foliage. After flowering, that rosette dies back naturally, leaving its offsets to continue the colony’s growth cycle.

Sempervivum ‘Onyx’ prefers full sun to light shade and thrives in gritty, well-drained soil with minimal organic matter. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant once established and endures both cold frosts and summer heat, making it well-suited to Australian conditions. Ideal for rockeries, containers, green roofs, or borders, it pairs beautifully with silver or lime-green succulents for contrast.

Low-maintenance yet visually dramatic, Sempervivum ‘Onyx’ is perfect for gardeners seeking structure, resilience, and enduring colour in all seasons — a plant that quietly commands attention without demanding effort.
