Sempervivum ‘Reward’ is a resilient, alpine-style succulent prized for its tight, symmetrical rosettes and its ability to shift colour with the seasons. Originating from the mountainous regions of Europe, this cultivar blends the classic hardiness of traditional hens-and-chicks with a refined, compact form that makes it ideal for Australian gardens and container collections. Its fleshy, triangular leaves form neat rosettes that transition from fresh green tones to rich red blushes, particularly in colder weather or full sun, giving it year-round visual interest.
Growing naturally as a clumping mat-former, Sempervivum ‘Reward’ produces numerous offsets that gradually knit together into dense, attractive colonies. Each individual rosette maintains a low profile, generally staying close to the ground while slowly expanding in diameter under favourable conditions. During summer, mature rosettes may send up a tall flowering stem topped with star-shaped pink to reddish blooms. As a monocarpic plant, the flowering rosette completes its life cycle after blooming, but the surrounding offsets seamlessly continue the colony’s growth.
In cultivation, this Sempervivum thrives in full sun and well-drained, gritty soil. A cactus or succulent mix enriched with coarse sand, perlite, or scoria helps prevent excess moisture around the roots. Watering should follow a “soak and dry” approach—thorough drinks during active growth, followed by complete drying between waterings. Its exceptional cold tolerance makes it suitable for regions across southern Australia, provided winter drainage is excellent.
Low-maintenance and naturally pest-resistant, Sempervivum ‘Reward’ is an excellent choice for rockeries, green roofs, pathway edges, troughs, and decorative pots. Its colour shifts, tidy structure, and colony-forming habit make it a rewarding, long-lived feature in any succulent collection.
