Sempervivum 'Skrocki's Beauty'

Sempervivum 'Skrocki's Beauty' is a distinctive hardy succulent with beautifully textured rosettes, dramatic seasonal colour and conspicuous silvery-white hairs along the leaf margins. Named after renowned Sempervivum hybridiser Ed Skrocki, this eye-catching cultivar combines fresh green growth with rich red to orange-red colouring that can transform its appearance throughout the year.

Red, Green & Silver

One of the most attractive features of 'Skrocki's Beauty' is the contrast between its foliage colours and softly hairy leaf margins. The fleshy leaves can emerge bright lime to fresh green before developing increasingly strong red, burgundy and orange-red pigmentation as conditions change. The colour may cover much of the leaf or appear in contrasting areas against the remaining green, creating the wonderfully varied appearance seen in mature plants.

Fine silvery-white hairs fringe the margins of the leaves and become especially noticeable around the younger central growth. Against strongly coloured foliage these hairs create a pale outline around each leaf, emphasising the structure of the rosette and giving the plant an almost frosted appearance.

Seasonal Colour Changes

Like many Sempervivums, 'Skrocki's Beauty' can look remarkably different at various times of the year. Light intensity, temperature, available moisture and active growth all influence its colouring. Under suitable conditions the red pigmentation can become particularly strong, while periods of fresh active growth may reveal considerably more lime-green foliage.

This constantly changing combination of green, red and silver is one of the cultivar's greatest attractions. Rather than remaining a single colour throughout the year, established plants provide an evolving display as the seasons and growing conditions change.

Growth & Offsets

'Skrocki's Beauty' readily produces offsets on stolons around the parent rosette, gradually forming dense clusters. The young offsets are particularly attractive, often displaying strong contrasting colour while still attached to their reddish stolons.

Offsets can be left in place to create an expanding mat of rosettes or separated once established to produce additional plants. Its compact growth and colourful foliage make it particularly well suited to decorative pots, troughs, rockeries, gravel gardens and mixed Sempervivum collections.

Flowers & the Sempervivum Life Cycle

Mature rosettes may eventually produce upright flower stems carrying clusters of star-shaped pale pink flowers during the warmer months. The flowers provide an additional seasonal feature and are attractive to bees and other beneficial pollinating insects.

Like other Sempervivums, each individual rosette is monocarpic, meaning it flowers once and then gradually dies. The surrounding offsets continue growing and maintain the colony. Once flowering has finished, the spent flower stalk and declining rosette can simply be removed.

Growing Sempervivum 'Skrocki's Beauty'

'Skrocki's Beauty' performs best outdoors with plenty of light and excellent drainage. A sunny position helps maintain compact growth and encourages the strongest foliage colours, while plants receiving less light may remain considerably greener.

Grow in a gritty, free-draining succulent mix and water thoroughly when required, allowing the growing medium to dry between waterings. Avoid continually wet soil, particularly during cooler weather. This is a remarkably cold and frost-tolerant succulent when grown in well-drained conditions.

In particularly hot Australian locations, some protection from extreme afternoon summer sun can be beneficial, especially for plants growing in small pots. With good light, airflow and drainage, 'Skrocki's Beauty' is an easy-care and rewarding Sempervivum with exceptional year-round character.
