Senecio crassissimus (Vertical Leaf Senecio) is an eye-catching succulent native to the sweltering regions of south-central Madagascar, particularly between Betroka and Ihosy. Renowned for its unique vertical leaves, this small shrub displays fleshy, glaucous foliage with striking purple margins. The flat, obovate leaves, which can grow up to 10 cm long and 3 cm wide, orient themselves vertically to minimize sun exposure, conserving moisture in its arid natural habitat. This adaptation gives the plant a distinctive "propeller-like" appearance, earning it the nickname "Propeller Plant."
Growing to a height of about 60 cm and spreading up to 45 cm wide, Senecio crassissimus also produces branched stalks adorned with bright yellow flowers during its active season, from mid-summer to winter. The flower stalks can reach up to 60 cm tall, adding a pop of vibrant colour to its subtle blue-green and purple hues.
This succulent thrives in well-drained sandy soil and bright but indirect sunlight, making it ideal for Australian climates in warmer zones (9a to 11b). It is drought-tolerant once established but should be protected from overwatering, as soggy conditions can lead to root rot. During winter dormancy, watering should be minimized to keep the plant healthy.
Propagation is simple, either by seed or cuttings, with the latter offering a faster, more reliable method. This intriguing plant’s combination of vertical geometry, vibrant foliage, and resilience makes it a standout feature in xeriscape gardens, pots, or even modern indoor settings.
