Senecio rowleyanus variegata, commonly known as Variegated String of Pearls and now botanically classified as Curio rowleyanus 'Variegatus', is a trailing succulent with distinctive pearl-like leaves patterned in green, cream and pale yellow. Individual pearls vary considerably in their variegation, and pink to soft purplish tones can also develop under suitable growing conditions.
Variegated Pearl-Like Foliage
The fleshy leaves are almost spherical and are carried along slender trailing stems. Each pearl can contain a different balance of green and creamy-white tissue, ranging from predominantly green leaves through strongly marbled forms to almost entirely cream or pale yellow leaves.
The leaves also retain the characteristic translucent epidermal “window” found in Curio rowleyanus. This narrow translucent area allows light to penetrate more deeply into the fleshy leaf, increasing the internal area available for photosynthesis.
Variegated String of Pearls is generally slower growing than the ordinary green form because the cream-coloured portions of the foliage contain little or no chlorophyll.
Trailing Growth & Flowers
The slender stems naturally creep across the growing surface and can root at their nodes where they remain in contact with suitable growing medium. In containers, established stems cascade over the edges and can develop into a dense curtain of trailing foliage, making the plant particularly well suited to hanging baskets.
Healthy, actively growing plants can flower quite freely, producing numerous small flower heads held above the foliage on slender stems. The buds are often pink to lilac before opening into small white to cream, brush-like flowers. In our nursery we regularly see Variegated String of Pearls flowering across much of the growing year, including spring, summer and autumn, rather than being restricted to a short flowering season.
From Senecio to Curio
This species was long known as Senecio rowleyanus, a name that remains widely used in horticulture. Under current botanical classification it is accepted as Curio rowleyanus, a South African species in the Asteraceae family. The species is native to the Cape Provinces of South Africa, where the ordinary green form grows naturally as a creeping, mat-forming succulent.
The familiar variegated plant is a cultivated form of the species and is commonly listed botanically as Curio rowleyanus 'Variegatus'.
Growing Variegated String of Pearls
Grow in a free-draining succulent mix in a bright position with good airflow. Bright filtered light or gentle morning sun generally maintains compact growth and good variegation. Because strongly variegated foliage contains less chlorophyll, protect plants from prolonged intense Australian summer afternoon sun, which can scorch the paler portions of the leaves.
Water thoroughly when required and allow the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Avoid keeping the mix continuously wet, as prolonged excess moisture can lead to stem and root problems. Water requirements will vary considerably with season, temperature, container size and growing conditions rather than following a fixed watering schedule.

Succulents naturally change in colour, size and form throughout the year. Many develop richer colours and more compact growth during periods of seasonal stress, particularly through cooler months and brighter conditions, while warmer or lower-light conditions may produce greener, softer growth.
The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
