Adromischus hemisphaericus, also known as Brosplakkies or brittle patches, is a charming succulent plant that is native to the Western Cape of South Africa. This perennial plant is a member of the Crassulaceae family and is characterized by its small, branching habit. The grey branches have peeling bark and can reach a diameter of 8 mm. The leaves, which are grey with purple spots, can flake with wax, and are mostly flat and ovate. During mid-summer, Adromischus hemisphaericus produces inflorescences that reach 25 cm tall with many tubular flowers. The greenish-brown sepals are topped with triangular, light pink petals.
Adromischus hemisphaericus is a hardy plant that is easy to grow in any free-draining, gritty compost. Their compact habit allows for a collection to be maintained in a small space, and they grow well on any sunny window ledge or the top shelf of the greenhouse. Watering should be done mostly from spring to fall, and the plant should be allowed to dry out between waterings. Adromischus can tolerate cool, frost-free conditions during the winter if kept dry. It is best to keep water off the foliage during the winter. Mealybugs and vine weevils can be discouraged with a systemic insecticide. This plant is a great addition to any succulent collection and is sure to impress with its unique appearance and easy care.
