Adromischus triflorus also known as 'Calico Hearts' is a fascinating dwarf succulent plant that belongs to the Crassulaceae family. This plant is native to South Africa and Namibia and is a popular species in cultivation due to its unique and variable foliage, as well as its striking flowers. It is known for its small, elongated leaves that can be green, grey-green, reyish-brown or burgundy red in color, with tiny waxy dots and occasional red spots. The leaves are erectly spreading, decussate and usually thicker in the lower part. The upper half of the leaf has a horny margin that gives it an attractive appearance.
One of the most distinctive characteristics of Adromischus triflorus is its flower buds, which have curved apices. These buds stand out from those of other succulent species and are a defining feature of this plant. In summer, the plant produces flowers on a long, thin stem that can range in color from pink to red. The flowers are greenish on the outside and white or pink on the inside with purple margins. They have club-shaped trichomes mainly towards the throat and anthers included.

It prefers bright positions, but not under direct sunlight, and requires well-drained soils that imitate its natural habitat. It is hardy and can survive at a minimum temperature of 5°C. In cultivation, Adromischus triflorus will form a multi-branched subshrub that can grow up to 20 cm tall.
In the wild, Adromischus triflorus is found in the Cape province, in southwestern Karoo, and from near Worcester to Willowmore and Mossel Bay, in little Karoo. It commonly grows in the lower slopes, in gravelly soils. This plant is locally common on gravelly lower slopes or associated with rock outcrops. It grows in shade or shows some hardship from full sun.
Adromischus triflorus can be propagated from stem cuttings or leaves. Its fibrous roots make it an easy plant to propagate, and it will readily form new plants. The cuttings can be taken at any time of the year and should be left to dry for a few days before laying flat on damp well draining potting mix or propagating medium.
Overall, Adromischus triflorus is an exquisite succulent plant that is highly prized for its attractive foliage and striking flowers. Its unique characteristics make it a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts of succulent plants.
