Aeonium arboreum 'Chanel' is a captivating succulent admired for its striking variegated foliage and elegant rosette formation. This subshrub produces broad, symmetrical rosettes that can reach up to 30 cm in diameter, featuring spoon-shaped leaves with a dynamic colour range. The foliage transitions from vibrant green to deep burgundy or near-black, highlighted by vivid red margins that intensify under full sun or cooler temperatures, particularly in Australian autumn and winter months.
Also known as Aeonium 'Cornish Rose', this cultivar shares a close botanical relationship with its parent species Aeonium arboreum. It forms dense, short-branched clusters that add architectural interest to succulent gardens or container displays. The plant’s growth habit is compact yet spreading, often reaching around 30 cm tall and up to 60 cm wide, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor cultivation in temperate climates.
During late winter to spring, Aeonium arboreum 'Chanel' produces tall, conical inflorescences adorned with small, bright yellow, star-shaped flowers. This flowering signals the end of the rosette’s life cycle, a natural process common to many Aeoniums. After flowering, new growth often emerges from basal shoots, ensuring the plant’s ongoing vitality.
For optimal care, provide bright, indirect sunlight for at least 4 to 6 hours daily, though this succulent thrives and develops its most vivid colours when exposed to full sun in a sheltered position. Well-drained soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix, is essential to prevent root rot. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between watering sessions. Aeonium 'Chanel' tolerates mild Australian frost but performs best in sheltered garden spots or indoors during cooler months.
Propagation is straightforward via stem cuttings, making it easy to expand your collection or share this beautiful cultivar. Its combination of bold colour, compact form, and seasonal interest makes Aeonium arboreum 'Chanel' a valued addition to any succulent enthusiast’s garden.
