Aeonium 'Medusa'

Aeonium ‘Medusa’ is one of the most dramatic modern variegated Aeoniums, producing richly coloured rosettes in combinations of green, cream, pink, crimson, burgundy and near-black. At peak colour, the contrast can be extraordinary, with dark central leaf zones surrounded by intensely coloured margins that give each rosette a bold, almost luminous appearance.

From Aeonium ‘Velour’

‘Medusa’ is recognised as a variegated mutation of Aeonium ‘Velour’, linking its deep purple-burgundy colouring with one of the best-known dark Aeonium cultivars. Specialist cultivar histories trace the widely distributed form to a mutation discovered in the Netherlands and subsequently developed and distributed through Asia, although evidence of an earlier similar mutation from ‘Velour’ has also been documented.

This background helps explain the extraordinary combination of dark pigmentation and variegation seen in ‘Medusa’. Depending on season and growing conditions, plants can shift considerably in appearance, from greener active growth to intense pink, red and purple-black tones.

Colour That Changes with the Seasons

Cooler conditions and good light generally encourage the richest colour, while plants may become greener or less intensely pigmented at other times of the year. Variegation can also vary between rosettes, giving mature branching specimens a wonderfully varied appearance.

Growing Aeonium ‘Medusa’

Grow in bright light with gentle direct sun to maintain strong colour and compact rosettes. Acclimatise plants gradually before exposing them to stronger sunlight, as variegated foliage can scorch if moved abruptly into harsh Australian summer sun. Protection from extreme afternoon heat is particularly worthwhile during heatwaves.

Use a freely draining succulent mix and water thoroughly during active cooler-season growth, allowing excess moisture to drain away. Reduce watering as growth slows during hot weather and protect plants from significant frost. Stem cuttings provide a straightforward method of propagating established branching plants.
