Aeonium 'Sunburst'
Aeonium 'Sunburst', commonly known as Copper Pinwheel, is one of the most recognisable variegated Aeoniums, producing large rosettes of green and creamy yellow foliage that can develop beautiful pink to copper-coloured margins under good light.
Large Variegated Rosettes
The broad, spoon-shaped leaves form impressive rosettes that can exceed 20 cm across under favourable conditions. Each leaf typically carries a green central area surrounded by cream to pale yellow variegation, while the outer margins can become flushed with pink or copper tones.
The combination creates the pinwheel effect behind the common name Copper Pinwheel. Colour varies naturally with light, temperature and season, with brighter conditions generally producing stronger pink edging.
Origin & Identity
'Sunburst' has been cultivated for decades and was historically associated with Aeonium decorum. Later horticultural study questioned that identification, with Aeonium davidbramwellii now considered a more likely botanical affinity. Its precise original origin is not fully documented, so it is best treated simply as the established cultivar Aeonium 'Sunburst'.
Sunburst Crest
Collectors interested in unusual growth forms may also enjoy Aeonium 'Sunburst Crest'. It carries the familiar green, cream and pink colouring of 'Sunburst', but fasciation transforms the normal growing point into extraordinary flattened, crested growth.
Growing Conditions
'Sunburst' grows well in containers or free-draining garden beds. A bright position encourages compact growth and good colour, although its pale variegated sections can scorch more readily than green foliage. In hotter Australian climates, protection from intense afternoon summer sun can help maintain attractive leaves.
Water according to growth and conditions, allowing the mix to drain freely. Aeoniums are generally most active through the cooler months and may slow or partially close their rosettes during hot summer weather, when less water is required.
Flowering
Mature rosettes can eventually flower. As with other Aeoniums, an individual rosette is monocarpic, meaning that particular growing point dies after flowering. Branches and offsets that have not flowered continue growing, so an established multi-headed plant can carry on for many years.

Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
